Am I going too far to suggest that the Republican Party may be basically dead? It’s kind of a bold assertion, but I seriously wonder if the Republican brand hasn’t been damaged beyond repair by the past 8 years. I do think that Sarah Palin represents the future of the party. The question is, what happens to the traditional Republican base now that the party is officially the Party of Stupid/Grand Incompetence Party?

I’ve long said that the GOP that was ascendent in the 90s and dominated the past 8 years was a very unlikely coalition of Pinstripes and Pinheads. Just as Nixon, Atwater et al successfully tore apart the Dems’ unlikely coalition of intellectuals, labor, Southerners, minorities, and DFHs, the GOP’s own Strange Victory is not really sustainable once they’ve been in power for awhile. The pinheads want to know, why haven’t we locked up the DFHs yet, banned teaching of evolution, and put a picture of Moses riding a dinosaur on all our coins? The David Brookses of the world realize in horror that the vast unwashed who they’ve harnessed to win elections have actually become the cornerstone of the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Reagan.

Maybe I’m wrong and someone like Mittens is really the future of the party. But I don’t think so. One way or another, I think this coalition won’t exist 4 years from now. Will the Main Street, Howard Cunningham conservatives start a new Conservative Party? Or will they win back the GOP, causing the Palin/Limbaugh/Beck/Dobson crowd to leave the party and form the Wingnut party between now and 2012?

Maybe I’m way off base here, but somehow I don’t think so.
