Existential

Noz is right. It drives me insane when anyone suggests that the threat from Iran or Al Qaeda (or Saddam, back in the day) in any way rivals the threat we experienced from the Soviet Union. As a high-school kid attending Close Up in 1985, I sat in on a House vote (boooring!) on the MX missile. Those were the days! We could all be wiped off the face of the planet in mere minutes, we were deploying first-strike missile systems, and our President was cracking jokes about it.

The cold war was the era of the true existential threat. Most of what truly threatens our existence at this point are not terrorists or foreign militaries but longer-term issues that McCain has shown no real interest in addressing.
